Objectives

This sub-theme aims at the construction of several thermodynamic models to simulate the indicated performance of an engine running on ethanol. The Project to be developed by the different research groups requires frequent interaction between simulation and experiments. Simulation models must be “calibrated” with experimental results to better model the real engines – linking up with the experimental work in engine test benches made in Maua Institute of Technology. The thermodynamic simulation can evaluate new designs of engines and effects of parameters variation, without the need for prototyping, neither to do modifications in the real engines. Furthermore, thermodynamic simulation can analyze various technical options, both individually or in an integrated way, with low impacts on Project costs. So, the Project can focus its efforts and resources only on the most important experiments and in those which have higher chances of success.

Expected Results

a) Assess the effects of variations in operating parameters such as the duration of combustion, the ignition timing, the water content in the ethanol and the quantity of recirculated exhaust gas (EGR) on the indicated performance of engines.

b) Obtain trends of the variation of operating parameters in order to assist the targeting of future experimental studies.

c) Explore possibilities of new mechanical configurations for engines.
