The laboratory of Engines and Vehicles of the Maua Institute of Technology counts on 14 engine test cells and its laboratories are responsible for designing and conducting exploratory tests in passenger car powertrains representing the state-of-the-art of multi-cylinder engines. These engines are modified and properly instrumented to allow measurements and analysis of combustion pressures, fuel consumption, exhaust emissions and other major physical parameters (torque, brake power, temperatures, pressures, flows, etc) in an environment which simulates specific conditions of vehicle utilization, either looking into increase of fuel conversion efficiency and reduction of CO2 emissions or looking for endurance limits of engine components and subsystems.
Engine test cells equipped with brake dynamometers, fuel supply systems, fuel flow (Coriolis principle) and exhaust gas measurement bench (Horiba Mexa 200), intake air temperature and humidity control, open engine control unit (ETAS INCA + development ECU), data logging and test automation (AND iTest), combustion pressure measurement and analysis (AND Phoenix and AVL Indimodul) are the main systems employed at the lab.
The main objective of activities being carried, as part of Prof. Urbano Ernesto Stumpf Research Center, is to experimentally evaluate the impact of fuel injection systems and air intake designs on performance, emissions and combustion characteristics with different fuels/substances and their blends, such as pure gasoline anhydrous and hydrous ethanol with varying water content. It is also planned to study the impact of EGR (exhaust gas recirculation) and supercharging with these fuels on PFI (port fuel injection) and DI (direct injection) engines.
Concepts and results obtained by other Research Center´s Labs will be tested in the multi-cylinder engine at CEUN to check the feasibility of certain technologies derived from deep understanding of basic phenomena of mixture formation and combustion.
